This page will contain current lace exhibition informationThe Cowper and Newton Museum
If you are travelling around Bedford and Buckinghamshire, and looking for lace in not so well known places, why not visit, The Cowper and Newton Museum in Olney.
Set in a picturesque village at the end of a long wide tree lined main road, lies the house, Orchardside, where William Cowper (poet, hymn writer and supporter of the local Lacemakers) used to live. The main part of the building is dedicated to his life and that of the Rev John Newton. But part of the museum is dedicated to the Bucks Lace Industry and lace made in the area. At present the display is being moved around, so I feel that Elizabeth Knight, (past Curator and lace Enthusiast) would love to have a lot of visitors signing the visitor's book saying that they are interested in the Lace collection. The museum also has a lovely garden using plants growing prior to 1800. The museum is open March to October only.

National Flax, Lace and Linen MuseumIf you are venturing abroad to Belgium have been to Bruge and are wondering where else to visit, do go the National Flax, Lace and Linen Museum Eteinne Sabbelaan 4, Kortrijk. This museum is about half an hours drive south of Bruge and is in an old farm on the southern outskirts of Kortrijk. One of the large Flemish barns is the Flax Museum, which is very interesting and makes you understand the linen thread we use for lace. The farmhouse has been turned into a Tavern where you can get coffee or a meal. These building form three sides of a square and you do have to ask where the lace exhibition is! You will be directed round the back, where you will see another very large Flemish barn. It took us over two hours to go round this very well laid out display of beautiful Lace using the audio guides in English (other Languages available).
Upstairs they have tableau's of the use of linen and lace through out life. A very interesting way to display lace and linen. My only disappointment was that it was all old lace. I would have liked to see some modern lace there as well. But saying that we spent about five hours there and I would be only to glad to go again.
